Ice Skating Path, Shops Among Ideas For Old St. Charles Police Station Site

City officials and the park district are considering several options for the vacant Fox River property, officials said.

ST. CHARLES, IL — Several ideas remain under consideration for the redevelopment of St. Charles' former police station site along the Fox River, including an ice skating path, band shell, shops and an open-air market.

The property at 211 N. Riverside Ave. has been vacant since 2019, when the police department moved to a new facility on Main Street. The city has gathered public input and is now working with the St. Charles Park District on potential plans for the property, according to the Daily Herald.

City officials said a skating path could operate from November through February and become a walking path during warmer months, while small shops could potentially be paired with a farmers market, the Daily Herald is reporting.

Other options include a band shell or covered open-air market, though officials noted each concept comes with costs and other challenges, including an estimated $3 million to $5 million needed to replace the river wall and adjacent pathway, according to the article.
