SOUTH ELGIN, IL — Anderson Humane in South Elgin is among several animal rescue shelters across the U.S. taking in beagles that are being rescued from Envigo, a breeding and research facility in Virginia.

Anderson will care for 100 beagles as they "transition these pups into their forever homes," according to a Facebook post from Anderson. The beagles are expected to be at the shelter soon, and Anderson Humane is now taking applications for foster homes. The local animal shelter is also accepting donations, which will fund care for the pups.

The Humane Society of the United States has spearheaded the effort to transfer the dogs from the Envigo facility to shelters across the country in what has been called a "historic operation." Many of these dogs were bound for animal testing laboratories across the country, according to the Humane Society.
