Be a Literacy Volunteer

Help an adult learn English

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley will hold a free tutor training workshop for residents who want to help adults understand English and adapt to our community. The workshop will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 12, 14, 19, and 21 at the St. Charles Public Library. Each resident who completes training will be matched with one adult learner. Volunteer tutors and adult learners meet for one hour each week at times and public locations that are convenient.

The workshop provides texts, study material, and training so that anyone can help. Volunteers do not need to know a second language or have a professional teaching background to make a difference. Volunteers get guidance and support when they need it. Experienced tutors are glad to share what they have learned.

From week to week, volunteers see their students get more comfortable and fluent in English and they know they are making a difference in their students’ lives. Volunteers also benefit as they see the results of their efforts and broaden their understanding of values and lifestyles other than their own.
