'Chair-ity' Auction Raises $4,000 for the Beautification of Downtown St. Charles
There were over 100 entries during this past summer's 'Chair-ity' program. Many donated their Adirondack chairs for an online auction.

Submission by the Downtown St. Charles Partnership
The Downtown St. Charles Partnership (DSCP) wrapped up the summer long “Chair-ity” program earlier this month. The event placed decorated Adirondack style chairs throughout downtown St. Charles during the summer.
The program encouraged any individual, group or business to participate by creating imaginative and unique works of art appropriate for public display.

The event brought out over 100 entries, including local downtown businesses, like STC Capital Bank, Small Cakes, A Cupcakery and The Diamondaire. There was also participation by many community groups, school groups and local artists to round out the entries. Most of the chairs were purchased by the participants from the St. Charles Ace Hardware at a discounted price.
Many of the entrants donated their chairs for the online auction taking place in conjunction with the promotion. All of the proceeds from the auction will go back into the beautification of downtown St. Charles. The total proceeds from the auction totaled over $4,000.

The DSCP feels the program brought about numerous benefits to Downtown St. Charles, according to a news release.
“It was a wonderful summer again for the Chair-ity program; it’s pleasing to see the social spaces that the chairs create in downtown.” said Jenna Sawicki, Interim Executive Director of the DSCP. “We again had a dedicated group of volunteers, wonderful cooperation from the City and our community partners, and a high level of participation from the community.”
The Chair-ity program added a Facebook contest this year to get the community more involved.
Interested parties had the summer to check out the 2016 Chair-ity Facebook Album and “like” their favorite chair to equal a vote. The chairs were placed into one of four categories: Business, Resident, Non-Profit and Children’s. The winners for each category are listed below.
- Business: Alpha Graphics
- Non-Profit: Anderson Animal Shelter
- Resident: Emily Clark
- Children's: Bethlehem Preschool Center
