Charges Filed In Crash That Killed Girl, 4, In Kane County

Edgar Barrios, 20, of DeKalb faces several felonies, including reckless homicide, in connection with the Oct. 1 crash.

KANE COUNTY, IL — A 20-year-old DeKalb man faces aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide charges after authorities say he caused a crash in October that killed a 4-year-old girl.

The collision happened at about 6:40 p.m. on Oct. 1 when a 2016 Chrysler 200 that was headed east on Route 38 near Francis Road crossed the center line into the westbound lanes of traffic, hitting a 2018 Jeep Compass head-on. The Chrysler then also hit a 2010 Subaru Forester, which was headed west on Route 38.

The 30-year-old driver of the Jeep was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Paityn Moore, a 4-year-old passenger in the Jeep, was first taken to Delnor Hospital and then flown to Lurie's Children's Hospital where she later died, according to authorities.

The girl was in a car seat in the back of the Jeep at the time of the collision, according to police.

The driver of the Chrysler, Edgar Barrios, 20, of DeKalb was taken to Delver Hospital and then take to Loyola Medical Center for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. On Monday, authorities said a warrant had been issued for Barrios arrest.

He has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence causing death, aggravated DUI causing death with THC in his blood, reckless homicide and obstructing identification.
