Construction At St. Charles Mall Site Could Start Soon

The former site for the St. Charles mall is being redeveloped with apartments planned for the property.

ST. CHARLES, IL – The St. Charles City Council on Monday approved the final plat for a redevelopment project at the long-vacant St. Charles Mall site – a location that has seen several different development plans come and go over the past 20 years. At the meeting, alderman OK'd a project that would bring at least 609 apartments to the lot near the Randall Road and Route 38 intersection, according to the Daily Herald. Construction could start as early as March for the Shoedeen Group's Prairie Centre project.

Trustees during Monday'smeeting again expressed a desire to see retail and restaurants included at the site, according to the Daily Herald. But Rita Tungare, the city's community and economic development director, said the city is going to have to wait and see how the residential component goes first before proceeding with any additions.

There is also some talk of possibly adding senior housing at some point to the property.
