D303 Sees Highest ACT Score Ever From Class of ‘13

ACT changes sample method for composite score.

St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 saw its graduating class of 2013 earn the highest ACT composite score — 23.7 — the district has recorded.

According to a release from the district on Thursday, the class of 2013 also posted District 303’s highest scores ever in English (23.4), reading, (23.5) and science (23.3). The mathematics score of 24.2 was second only to the class of 2010’s 24.4.

The district’s release states the comparisons are based on calculations performed by District 303 only on 2013 graduates who took the ACT without accommodations, which allows a true
comparison to the scores from previous years. That’s because beginning in 2013, ACT has changed which students are included in the ACT senior score report. That means ACT no longer will exclude scores in the ACT Senior Report for students who took the test with accommodations.

District 303 scores for the 2013 senior class including those students with accommodations, were:

Composite — 23.4
English — 23.0
Mathematics — 23.8
Reading — 23.1
Science — 23.0.

The release states the scores are not directly comparable to ACT senior scores prior to 2013, but that even including the students who took the test with accommodations, District 303’s ACT scores are well above state averages:

2.8 higher in English
3.1 higher in mathematics
2.7 higher in reading
2.5 higher in science
2.8 higher for the Composite score.

“While we applaud ACT’s decision to include students with accommodations in the Senior
Report, the 2013 ACT Senior Report published scores are not directly comparable to ACT
Senior Report scores from previous years,” said District 303 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Donald Schlomann.

“The 2013 results start a new baseline, similar to what happened beginning in 2002, when Illinois began requiring all juniors in the state to take the ACT,” he continued. “Our students continue to demonstrate significant growth on the ACT and in the classroom as we prepare them for success beyond high school.”
