Developers Propose New Hotel for Downtown St. Charles

The owner of Hotel Baker says he's concerned over the proposed development.

ST. CHARLES, IL - A developer is proposing a 108-room, five-story hotel be built just north of the new ALE Solutions headquarters building in downtown St. Charles, which puts it “right in the sightline of the 53-room, 90-year-old Hotel Baker,” according to the Daily Herald.

Bob Rasmussen and the investment team behind the First Street Development II project say the new hotel feature a swimming pool and would be geared toward families, the Daily Herald reports. Joe Salas, who bought the Hotel Baker at an auction in 2003, says he’s concerned what the new hotel could mean for his hotel.

"We are very concerned," Salas told the Daily Herald. "It's hard to look at it and say it's not going to make a negative impact. New is new. We can't fight new. I don't oppose any new hotels in the area. But does it have to be right across from us in the downtown?"

Rasmussen's hotel plan already received a nod of approval from the city's Historic Preservation Commission and St. Charles aldermen are expected to first take a look at his plans near the end of July.
