Economic Development Director retiring after 30 years

Aiston worked hard to advance the economic vitality of St. Charles during one of the toughest downturns ever.

Chris Aiston, Economic Development Director for the City of St. Charles, has announced that he will retire from government service as of Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

Serving as Economic Development Director is never an easy task, even in times of economic prosperity. It seems that there is always someone who thinks that there isn't enough being done to bring new stores, restaurants, and other sources of economic opportunity. At the same time, there are others who say the City is doing too much to change things.

Chris came to the City of St. Charles with prior experience working for DeKalb County, the City of Geneva, and Kane County. He was hired by the City of St. Charles in November, 2009. Since that time, Chris has worked hard to advance the economic vitality of St. Charles during one of the toughest downturns our country - and our community - has faced.

Chris brought stability after the City's economic development efforts experienced a period marked by inconsistency. Chris brought new energy and a fresh perspective to St. Charles. Chris also brought a unique personality that invigorated many and challenged some. I can honestly say that his sense of humor and cheerful disposition lightened the mood during some very tough times.

Chris has been responsible for a variety of projects and initiatives. Restaurant Week, the Shop St. Charles Challenge, and real estate broker tours are all programs initiated during Chris's tenure. Chris also provided leadership in:

  • developing an incentive agreement for Sears to retain its retail presence in St. Charles
  • crafting incentive agreements that resulted in three automobile dealerships enhancing their presence
  • working to secure a Triumph motorcycle dealership to co-locate with Fox River Harley-Davidson
  • securing RR Donnelley to occupy the former Pier 1 warehouse on Kirk Road
  • developing a "Knowledge-based" incentive program to attract the headquarters of Clarke Environmental

Finally, Chris worked to develop stronger relationships between the City and business-focused organizations. He fostered a more collaborative relationship with the Downtown St. Charles Partnership by cooperating on events, marketing, and advertising. And, he has served on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce since his arrival in St. Charles.

Please join me in wishing Chris well in his retirement from public service and any future endeavors he may choose to undertake.
