Fitness Pro Focuses on Senior's Needs, Not Event

Thinking beyond the running event is important to reinforcing healthy abilities that will help woman stay physically active, longer, fitness pro Kate Galliett says.

Being ready for a race is not just ensuring a runner’s body is ready for the race. It’s more bout finding a balanced training regiment that helps prepare he whole body, not just for running, but for healthy living, said Kate Galliett.

The fitness pro and co-owner of , said that in working with Kowalik, she wants to make sure Kowalik not only is ready for the race, but that her balance, limberness and other aspects of her body’s shape also will continue to help he stay on her toes as her body continues to age.

“Honestly, picking something like running that you can love to do … hopefully opens up your eyes to some of the other things you need to take care of yourself,” Galliett said. “For example, with us meeting to start working together to help her running, he eyes came open to all the different ways she could improve her nutrition, all the ways she could improve her physical structure — with things like strength training and stretching — to improve her overall structure so that her overall wellness could continue to flourish despite all the people her own age and younger saying, ‘It’s all downhill from here.’ ”

In Kowalik’s case, running was the passion that opened up her eyes to her overall health needs, Galliett said. So Kowalik pays more attention now to the condition of her mental clarity, her balance is, her nutrition.

“As a trainer, that is all really important stuff — you can’t be one-sided with fitness,” Galliett said. “You’ve got to address all of that at some point and to some degree.

“Otherwise, you’re going after these fitness goals but your health is declining because you’re not taking care of some of these other important factors,” Galliett said.

Consequently, she must research her individual client’s needs and goals before establishing a training regimen. “A well-rounded approach is really important to look a all those things.”
