On Tuesday, the mother of 7-year-old Lexi Hanson released the following statement: "Our girl is stable, she is in great hands, and she will pull through stronger than ever. Please continue to send love and prayers her way. Lexi does have long road to recovery but we know how truly lucky we are."

Funds are being raised for Hanson, who was hit while riding in a park near St. Charles on Mother's Day, according to a GoFundMe set up by the girl's aunt Monday morning. The young girl was airlifted to Lutheran General Hospital following the hit-and-run crash that happened around 1:05 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Geneva and Courier Avenues, police said. The girl has several broken bones, a spinal injury, abrasions and mental scarring, her aunt wrote on the fundraising website.

"I pray the list stops there," she wrote. She described her niece as having a "sweet, caring and sunny nature."

The GoFundMe has been set up to help cover medical costs. The girl's mother, a single mom, works as a massage therapist and her father will have to take off of work to help care for the girl, according to her aunt.

"My niece will be in the hospital for many days, possibly even weeks, and the medical care will continue once she is transferred home," her aunt wrote. As of Tuesday afternoon, the campaign has more than $17,000 for the family.

The crash remains under investigation.
