KANE COUNTY, IL — A former suburban mother accused of abducting her daughter in 2017 is in custody in Kane County.
Heather Unbehaun was arrested Saturday while shopping at a Plato's Closet in Asheville, NC, with her 15-year-old daughter, Kayla, after an employee recognized Heather. The case was recently featured on the Netflix series “Unsolved Mysteries.”
She was taken into custody on an extradition warrant out of Illinois and was booked at the Buncombe County jail on a $250,000 bail, according to police. She was later released there after posting bond.

Unbehaun faces two counts of child abduction-concealing or detaining a child or removing from court jurisdiction in Kane County for allegations she took her daughter, who was 9 years old at the time, amid a custody dispute.
South Elgin police traveled the country investigating Kayla Unbehaun's case, the department said in a news release, adding Kayla is in good condition and in good spirits, and that police are working to provide social services to the family.
“I’m overjoyed that Kayla is home safe,” her father, Ryan Iskerka, said in a prepared statement, thanking the agencies that assisted with the case. “We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning.”
Iskerka has continued to search for his daughter over the years, creating a GoFundMe to support the effort. A Facebook page called Bring Kayla Home has over 5,000 followers.
Heather Unbehaun is next expected in court for a status hearing in Kane County on June 14.
