How to Maintain Your Style in the Summer Heat
How to maintain your personal style in the summer heat

Ok, I get it. When it’s 90+ degrees outside you’re more focused on staying cool than looking the part. However, as adults our work life doesn’t stop just because it’s hot and humid outside – right? Recently, my clients have been asking me how they can look professional in the summer heat AND not want to pass out from heat stroke. If you’re struggling with the same thing, don’t worry – I have tips for you! (Naturally, right?)
4 Tips for Maintaining Your Professional Image in the Summer Heat
1) Fabric Matters
I’m not kidding on this one! There’s nothing worse than feeling like your clothes are sticking to you as you walk into work (am I right?). Choose fabrics that are lightweight and breathable and avoid anything that’s heavy. I’ll give you some examples. Lightweight fabrics include chiffon, cotton and cotton sateen. Notice I left out linen? I avoid linen personally and for my clients at all costs. Why? Unless you can stay standing in one place the entire day, expect for it to wrinkle like crazy! I’m not a fan of the fabric because of that, and who wants to get to a meeting with their pants/shirt/skirt completely wrinkled? I hope you don’t! Avoid heavy fabrics (that aren’t breathable) like leather and nylon (really any synthetic fibers). These fabric types will cause you to sweat more and you’ll feel incredibly uncomfortable as your clothes stick to your skin.

Guys* if you work in a formal work environment don’t pair a short sleeve shirt with a tie. Just like the ladies, switch up your suit fabrics. Avoid wool suits and instead opt for light-weight materials to keep you cooler.
2) Layer Like a Pro
I’ve heard from so many clients about how cold their offices are in the summer time (hello, air conditioning!). So to adapt to the cooler temps inside when it’s a sauna outside I suggest turning to layers. My favorite layering go-to in the summer is a cardigan. It’s easy to throw on over whatever you’re wearing when you get to the office plus it’s small enough to carry in your bag when you’re not inside. I suggest investing in a couple key colors for your wardrobe (opt for hues that flatter/enhance what’s already in your wardrobe).

3) Resist the Urge to Show Too Much
It’s easy to want to opt for super short hemlines and low cut tops when it’s hot outside (I get it, I really do!). However, when you’re a business professional you need to maintain that image no matter how hot it is outside. Instead of opting for showing more skin stick with colors and fabrics that light. I also recommend arriving to meetings a few minutes early to give yourself a chance to freshen up and cool down.
4) Keep it Simple
In the Fall/Winter it’s all about mixing textures and layers (mainly to stay warm). But in the summer it’s about simplicity because let’s face it – the more items you have on the hotter you’ll feel. Instead keep it simple and utilize accessories to add your style personality to the look. A silk blouse with a cotton pencil skirt can be taken up notch by adding a unique necklace and bangle.
