Literacy Volunteers Needed

Help an adult learn to read, write and speak English

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley will hold a free tutor training workshop for residents who want to help area adults read, write, speak and understand English. It will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays May 12, 14, 19 and 21 at the St. Charles Public Library.

The workshop will teach you how to tutor adults in English and will discuss the problems adults face when they know little about American norms and customs. Once you complete training, you will be matched with one adult learner and teach one hour per week. Staff members will provide continuing support.

Volunteers do not need to know a second language or have a background in education to help. According to learners, the most successful tutors are patient, are good listeners and give practical information. Volunteers teach in public places such as local libraries.
