Local Police Training Academy to have Accreditation Assessment

North East Multi-Regional Training host CALEA assessors April 3-5

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive on Monday April 2nd, to examine all aspects of North East Multi-Regional Training’s policy and procedures, general management, direction, organization and training operations, Director Thomas M. Reasoner announced today.

Verification by the assessors that North East Multi-Regional Training (NEMRT) meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation– a highly prized recognition of law enforcement training excellence, he said.

As part of the on-site assessment, NEMRT staff, local law enforcement executives and personnel, Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board members and their staff and the general public are invited to offer comments by calling (630) 896-8860, on Wednesday April 4th, between 9:00 am and noon.

Telephone comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address NEMRT’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the Standards for the Public Safety Training Academy Accreditation program is available at the corporate offices of North East Multi-Regional Training, in North Aurora.

Director Thomas Reasoner is available as a local contact at (630) 896 8860, extension 114, via fax at (630) 896 4422 or via e-mail at tom@nemrt.com.

Anyone wishing to make written comments about North East Multi-Regional Training’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may also send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), at 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320 Gainesville, Virginia 20155, TEL: (703) 352-4225, FAX (703) 890-3126. No public hearing will be scheduled.

North East Multi-Regional Training has to comply with 160 standards in order to gain accredited status, Director Reasoner said. These standards are organized into nine chapters or topic areas and represent the best professional requirements and practices for a public safety training academy.

Accreditation Manager April Morris said that the assessors assigned to us by CALEA are both law enforcement practitioners from out of state with extensive experience in training and police management. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other places where compliance can be verified. Once they complete their review of NEMRT, they will report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if NEMRT will retain Accredited status.

Accreditation lasts for four years, during which time the academy must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was originally certified.
