Officer Kills Male Trying To Attack People With Chainsaw At Assisted Living Facility: Cops

A shirtless male with a chainsaw tried to cut down a tree on the assisted living facility property then menaced residents, police said.

ST. CHARLES, IL — A male armed with a chainsaw was shot and killed by an officer Sunday after attacking residents at an assisted living facility in St. Charles, according to police.

Officers responded around 8:45 a.m. to a welfare check request in the 900 block of North Fifth Avenue after people reported that a shirtless male holding a chainsaw was trying to cut down a tree at the River Glen of St. Charles assisted living center, police said.

Just before officers arrived, additional reports came in that the male had entered the lobby of the facility and was confronting residents with the chainsaw, according to police.

Arriving officers tried to de-escalate the situation but the male attempted to “use the chainsaw against” both residents and officers, police said, adding a Taser proved ineffective.

“An Officer was then forced to fire his service weapon, striking the suspect,” St. Charles police said in a news release.
