Officials Address Safety Concerns At Red Gate, Randall Intersection

The intersection has seen 66 crashes since 2016, including a fatal crash last month that claimed the life of Kevin White, 20.

ST. CHARLES, IL — County officials are taking steps to address an uptick in crashes at the intersection of Randall and Red Gate roads following a fatal collision last month that claimed the life of a recent St. Charles North High School graduate.

Kevin White, a former St. Charles North High baseball player, was killed in the collision on Aug. 16, after the car he was riding in, which was driven by his friend, Mason Koffenberger, veered to avoid colliding with a car, which pulled in front of theirs at the intersection. Koffenberger's car hit a traffic signal pole.

Deanna Velazquez, the mother of Mason Koffenberger, spoke at a recent Kane County Board meeting, asking officials to take steps to make the intersection safer. Ella Roth, a St. Charles North High School senior, also spoke up at the meeting, presenting a petition with 8,000 signature calling on safety changes, including a protected left turn traffic signal.

There's been 66 crashes since 2016 at the intersection, which currently has a flashing yellow arrow for left turns, according to the article. County officials say they will change that to the green turn arrow during daytime hours and will switch back to the flashing yellow arrow during evening hours when traffic is less busy.
