Rep. Underwood Presents Award To Suburban Student

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — Prairie Ridge High School student Ermina Hassan recently received a Congressional Award Silver Medal. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, presented the medal to Hassan on Friday.

Hassan has completed over 200 hours hours of volunteer work at Mercy Hospital and Northwest Community Hospital. She has worked as a chair-side assistant, helped with patient-doctor communications and organized community outreach programs, including toy and food drives and refugee assistance, according to a Facebook post.

At Prairie Ridge, Hassan is the co-captain of the school speech team, sings a cappella in the choir and is a National Honor Society member. She started a medical club, which brings in physicians and other medical professionals to speak to students, according to the Kane County Chronicle.

While working at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, she organized an effort to provide oral hygiene kits to young children, according to the article. The kits included toothpaste, a toothbrush and dental floss, and were distributed to kindergarten through fifth grade students.

The presentation of the award on Friday took place at the St. Charles Public Library.
