ST. CHARLES, IL — The St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club is chipping in to support two local organizations working to help some of the area’s most vulnerable people amid the coronavirus outbreak in Illinois. The rotary club recently donated $1,000 each to St. Charles’ Lazarus House and the Northern Illinois Food Bank, based in Geneva, according to a news release.

The Lazarus House, located in downtown St. Charles, helps people who are in need of emergency shelter or food, or who need assistance paying their rent or utility bills. In order to abide by social-distancing guidelines, the organization was forced to move its emergency-shelter residents into local hotel rooms, the release states. The Lazarus House serves people in St. Charles, Batavia, Geneva and rural Kane County.

As well as continuing its normal food-distribution efforts, the Northern Illinois Food Bank is using mobile food pantries to reach residents who are in need of food. The food bank has two trucks that have made dozens of stops throughout the region this month.

The mobile pantry will make stops at the Fox Valley Church in West Dundee on April 27 and at the Old Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin on April 30. For more locations and dates, visit the Northern Illinois Food Bank’s online calendar.

The St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club doubled its initial $1,000 donation with a matching grant from Rotary District 6440, the release states. Members of the rotary club encouraged people to donate to both organizations’ efforts to help those in need during the coronavirus outbreak and thanked McNally’s in downtown St. Charles, where the club met each Tuesday morning until recently.

“Our club wishes everyone the very best as we deal with this unprecedented challenge,” members of the club said in the release. “And we wish to thank all the frontline workers who help take care of our needs — all health providers, grocery store workers, truck drivers, etc. — everyone, everyone, everyone.”
