St. Charles City Council Discusses Hike In Utility Costs

ST. CHARLES, IL — The St. Charles City Council has begun discussing increasing the city's home-rule sales tax as a way to bring in more funds for roadwork. Also during a Monday city council meeting, council members looked at a utility rate hike as a way to pay for operation costs, capital projects and debt service through 2027, according to Shaw Media Network.

City officials are looking at a .5 percent increase in the home-rules sales tax, which could bring in $4.4 million more per year, while city staff thinks a 12% hike in sewer rates and an 8% increase in water rates this year, followed by smaller increases in coming years, is a good move to help boost revenue, according to Shaw Media Network.

A majority of council members spoke in favor of the home-rule sales tax increase. As for the increase in utility costs, council members requested city staff provide more details, including the utility costs for neighboring municipalities, before continuing discussions.
