St. Charles To Close Portions Of 1st Street And Walnut Avenue

A portion of 1st Street in downtown St. Charles will close to vehicle traffic beginning April 1 to accommodate additional outdoor public seating. Picnic tables and chairs will be placed on the closed section of 1st Street as well as on the plaza space east of 1st Street. Access to the 1st Street parking structures will be maintained. A similar plan was put in place last year to help restaurants and bars during statewide COVID-19 mitigations.

The existing plaza west of 1st Street will accommodate outdoor dining for restaurants along the plaza. A portion of Walnut Avenue also will close to accommodate outdoor dining for Flagship on the Fox restaurant.

Road Closure Details

• 1st Street – A section of 1st Street from IL Rt. 64/Main St. to the entrance of the five-story parking deck will close April 1.
• Walnut Avenue – A section of Walnut Avenue along the length of Flagship on the Fox building will close beginning April 15.
• Street closures are anticipated to remain in place through the fall.

“St. Charles is a dining destination in the western suburbs,” said Ciara Miller, Economic Development Planner. “After the success of the outdoor dining program in 2020, we are optimistic that these temporary street closures will continue to attract residents and visitors to our local restaurants and shops.”

Last summer, the St. Charles City Council approved a Temporary Outdoor Dining program to allow expanded outdoor dining for restaurants and bars in St. Charles as a way to assist these businesses during the pandemic.
