St. Charles Community Remembers Gym Teacher Killed in Car Crash

T.J. Sportsman was killed in a crash in Wisconsin on June 14.

The St. Charles community is remembering and morning a 34-year-old elementary school gym teacher who was killed on June 14 in a car crash in Wisconsin.

Sportsman, of Sycamore, was a gym teacher at Munhall Elementary School in St. Charles. Parents, colleagues and friends of Sportsman have been hanging purple ribbons throughout St. Charles in his memory, according to the Kane County Chronicle.

Sportsman, who also was a basketball coach at Haines Middle School, was killed in a crash while he was on his way back from a fishing tournament in Wisconsin, the Daily Herald reports.

Sportsman is an Elgin native and graduated from Burlington Central High School where he was the second-leading scorer in the history of the school’s basketball team, according to the newspaper.

Sportsman is survived by his wife and two children.

An online fund-raising page set up in Sportsman’s memory has collected over $59,000 as of Tuesday morning. Those wishing to contribute to the fund can visit the memorial page.
