St. Charles owns the most desirable riverfront land and it located between Main and Illinois Streets. Whatever goes in there will set the image for the whole city. Presently the City has an agreement with a developer to give him this land as an inducement to do a project. This developer must really be something special in order to get such a gift.
The developer has missed 8 agreement milestones and the City can void the agreement. Instead the City is encouraging the developer to proceed with coming up with a new plan. The new plan will clutter the area with 4 story buildings that have large footprints. There will be 2 rental apartment buildings, 1 condo building, a pretty small plaza and a parking deck for mainly private parking. It won't look good from the Main Street Bridge and it won't give St. Charles a good image.
I would think it would be far better for the City if there were 1 or 2 six story stand out buildings with relatively small footprints, a large beautiful plaza and a parking deck with a lot of public parking.
Any opinions out there?
