St. Charles Officials Ask for Input on Flooding Woes

"Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend and be a part of the planning process," city officials said.

The city of St. Charles will be seeking the public’s input on its State Street Creek and 7th Avenue Creek Watershed Plan during meetings next week.

A watershed plan meeting will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 22 and a public education and outreach open house will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. at the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main Street.

“The city is looking for input in identifying issues and opportunities to reduce water pollution and flooding, and to protect natural resources,” said Assistant Director of Public Works, Engineering Karen R. Young. “Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend and be a part of the planning process."

What is Watershed Planning?

The primary goal of watershed planning is to restore impaired waters and protect unimpaired waters, according to the city of St. Charles news release.

City officials will develop an ecologically-based management plan for State Street Creek and 7th Avenue Creek watershed and the plan will focus on improving water quality by protecting green infrastructure, creating protection policies, implementing ecological restoration, and educating the public.

Who is Involved in the Watershed Planning?

This planning meeting is an opportunity for landowners, state and municipal agencies, Kane County, park districts, farm community, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders in the watersheds to coordinate land and water protection activities for the benefit of all residents, according to city officials.

Representatives for the city’s consultants, AES and HRGreen, will be on hand to meet with local stakeholders, provide details about the existing conditions of the watersheds, and help the group identify issues/opportunities. More information is available here.
