St. Charles OKs Study of Recreational Options for Fox River

Options that have been discussed include floating botanical gardens, elevated bike paths and white water rafting course.

St. Charles officials are moving forward with plans to create more recreational opportunities along the Fox River.

On Monday, St. Charles aldermen approved an allocation of $20,000 to fund a study that would look at realistic options for the Fox River in St. Charles, according to the Chicago Tribune. The funding would still need final approval from the St. Charles City Council before being allocated for the study, according to the Daily Herald.

Members from the St. Charles Active River Task Force, which include representatives the park district, city and various other stakeholders, have been meeting since February to discuss options for the Fox River in St. Charles, the Chicago Tribune reports. Amenities that have been discussed for the St. Charles portion of the river include floating botanical gardens, elevated bike paths and white water rafting course.

So far, the task force has received $66,000 in funding with hopes of adding another $20,000 from the St. Charles Park District this week, the Daily Herald reports.

The hope is that the funds could be used to hire consultants that would study the pros and cons of eight ideas for a portion of the river in downtown St. Charles, according to the Daily Herald.
