St. Charles School Lunch Prices Climb Amid Inflation, Rising Supply Costs

ST. CHARLES, IL — St. Charles Community Unit School District 303’s student lunch prices have increased by up to 70% since pre-COVID times, as schools have faced higher food, supply and operating costs amid broader inflation that has pushed up the price of groceries and other goods.

“Price adjustments have been driven by rising costs for food, supplies, and overall program operations,” the district said in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. The district also cited federal requirements for maintaining an equitable and financially sustainable meal program.

For the 2026-27 school year, full-price student lunches cost $4 at elementary schools, $4.25 at middle schools and $4.50 at the high school. In 2019-20, lunches cost $2.50 at elementary and middle schools and $3 at the high school.

That represents an increase of $1.50, or 60%, for elementary students; $1.75, or 70%, for middle school students; and $1.50, or 50%, for high school students.

The increases come after several years of elevated inflation following the COVID-19 pandemic. Food prices rose sharply nationwide during that period, while schools also faced higher costs for supplies, labor and other operations.

The district’s lunch prices have risen as follows:

• 2019-20: Elementary $2.50 | Middle $2.50 | High $3
• 2020-21: Elementary $2.90 | Middle $2.90 | High $3
• 2021-22: Elementary $2.90 | Middle $2.90 | High $3
• 2022-23: Elementary $3 | Middle $3.10 | High $3.25
• 2023-24: Elementary $3.25 | Middle $3.50 | High $3.75
• 2024-25: Elementary $3.50 | Middle $3.75 | High $4
• 2025-26: Elementary $3.75 | Middle $4 | High $4.25
• 2026-27: Elementary $4 | Middle $4.25 | High $4.50

About 18% of District 303 students currently receive free or reduced-price meals, according to the district. The percentage and total number of students receiving assistance have remained steady since 2019-20, the district said.

The district also said it has not seen an increase in applications for meal assistance during that period.
