St. Charles Tutor Honored for Work with Adult Learners

St. Charles tutor honored at the 25th Annual On the Road to Literacy Conference

Susan Morrison, a tutor for the Literacy Volunteers of Illinois Jump Start program at IYC-St. Charles, was honored with an Outstanding Tutor award on April 9, 2016 at the 25th Annual On the Road to Literacy Conference. The awards were made by Literacy Volunteers of Illinois and the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Center for Literacy.

In nominating Susan for the award, Melissa Auer of Literacy Volunteers of Illinois said, “Susan’s enthusiasm is contagious and she works to open the minds of her students, encouraging them to broaden their horizons and set ambitious goals.” The warmth and humor she displayed in her 70 hours of service in 2015 was very much appreciated in a correctional facility that particularly needs it. Susan brings her passion for science and her skills as a former teacher to the table, tailoring each session to the youth’s interests and abilities. Her non-judgmental attitude makes her a bright, affirming presence to her students.
