Construction of the facility are set to begin this fall, and the plant could start generating energy by early 2016.
St. Charles will be the host city for a pioneering solar energy plant that could supply residents with an environmentally safe source of energy, according to a Daily Herald report.
The city’s bid was the only one chosen by the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency, a 32-member nonprofit group of municipal electric systems, the report stated. Construction on the facility is set to begin this fall, and the plant could start producing usable power by the beginning 2016, the report added.

The plant most likely will be constructed on 2.3-acres of city-owned land near Kirk and Tyler roads, the report stated. Although St. Charles officials haven’t decided on which of the 11 bids they’ve received to design, build and maintain the plant for the next 20 years, one bidder has attracted their attention, and they plan on negotiating terms soon, the report added.
