St. Patrick Catholic School 5th Graders Win Contest, Invited to State Capitol in Springfield
SAINT CHARLES — St. Patrick Catholic School fifth graders participated in Illinois State Senator Karen McConnaughay’s 3rd Annual Art Contest for the 33rd District. Under the direction of Art Teacher Emily Carbonara, all fifth grade students at St. Patrick designed their own 8x10 representations of postage stamps with various themes symbolic of State of Illinois life, landscape and culture.
“We wanted the students to learn some history while creating their art,” said Carbonara. “The students gained a better understanding of the State of Illinois’ natural environment, landmarks and history. It was a lot of fun to see the diverse artistic points of view, and very rewarding to see our students apply what they learn in the classroom.”
St. Patrick Catholic School principal, Jodi Falotico awarded medals to the following eight semi-finalists on at a recent all-school assembly: Nathan Acosta; Tommi Bachta; Leo Carbonara; Annabelle Handjojo; Andrew Laskosz; Brook McCullough; Maggie Smith; and Maya Wickramasuriya. “This is the first time St. Patrick Catholic School has participated in this State contest, which we see as a celebration of both art and citizenship. It is important to help our young people achieve a strong sense of self-expression as well as a sense of belonging in the community. That is part of our school’s mission. We are very proud of their achievement,” said Falotico.
