St. Charles Fire Provides Free Smoke Detectors To Seniors
Older residents in St. Charles can request a free smoke detector from the St. Charles Fire Department.
ST. CHARLES, IL — The St. Charles Fire Department has partnered with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance to provide free smoke detectors to older residents living in the city of St. Charles.
According to fire officials, adults over the age of 65 years old are three times more likely to die in a house fire than younger adults, and the free smoke detector initiative is meant to protect local residents, according to a news release from the St. Charles Fire Department.
The fire department is also offering the following services to seniors:

- Home safety check: This quick overview of the home will address life-safety education, such as fire safety, kitchen safety and places where falls are possible.
- Vial of life program: This program assists the fire department during emergency medical calls by having a pre-determined location for vital patient information in the event the patient is incapacitated.
“These safety services are geared specifically towards the older adult population and are easy to implement,” said St. Charles fire chief Scott Swanson. “If you or someone you know is 65 years of age or older and lives in the City of St. Charles, I encourage you to take advantage of this important program.”
Those interested in scheduling an appointment can call the St. Charles Fire Department at 630-377-4458. A sign-up table will also be available at the annual fire department open house from 12 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 15 at fire station #1, 112 N. Riverside Ave.
