Volunteers Needed to Help Spruce Up Langum Woods

Are you ready to get outside now that the temperatures are warming up? Consider getting involved in the care of our local parks. The St. Charles Tree Commission is looking for volunteers, ages 12 and up, to help with the annual springtime care of Langum Woods on Riverside Drive, Saturday March 14, from 9-11a.m.

Volunteers will help spruce up the park after the long winter by clearing pathways and removing honeysuckle and buckthorn, two non-native, invasive species that can crowd out Langum Woods’ native oaks and hickories.

The effort is coordinated by the St. Charles Tree Commission, St. Charles Park District and the City of St. Charles. Interested volunteers should contact the City of St. Charles Public Works Department at pw@stcharlesil.gov or 630.377.4405.

“The Tree Commission is always looking for ways to reach out to the public with educational and awareness opportunities regarding our trees and parks,” said Pam Otto of the St. Charles Park District and member of the Tree Commission. “This event also is a great way to get outside and get involved in your community.”

Nine residents serve on the Tree Commission. As an advisory body, the Commission provides guidance, consultation and recommendations to the City regarding the care and maintenance of local trees.

For the last 17 years, St. Charles has earned the designation as a Tree City by Tree City USA, in recognition of its stewardship and education efforts regarding local and city-owned trees.
