Winning Artists Reveal Indulgence

There’s still time to view and take in the range of artist-created depictions of everything from excess to restraint in the Kavanagh Gallery’s current exhibit, “Indulgence.”

Running through April 18 at Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles, this juried show’s theme includes all types of artistic media. Artists from near and far submitted works that explore and interpret the concept of “indulgence.”

During the show’s opening reception on March 20, Jo Burke, Director of the NIU Art Museum in DeKalb, judged the show.

“When looking at the work, think: tolerance, leniency, permission, patience, considerateness, forgiveness, privilege, and intemperance,” she said.

Two coats: “Spring Blossom” and “New Classik” by Galina Villano, Chicago, IL

“My approach to looking at this thematic exhibition was to examine all the multiple definitions of indulgence and the array of directions and approaches that an artist could take to this topic,” said Burke. “The exhibit selection jurors had already set that tone, challenging me, or any other viewer, to sometimes have to think a while about why some pieces were in the show. It made for a fun exploration and gallery experience just as I expect it was fun for the artists to respond to the thematic topic as inspiration or re-interpretation of their artwork. The show is smart and sassy.”
