Woman Serving Time for Crash That Killed St. Charles Couple Still Fighting Sentence

Denise and Wade Thomas died in the 2009 crash.

A 31-year-old Aurora woman who is serving a six-year prison sentence for causing a crash that killed a St. Charles couple and injured 11 motorcyclists is fighting to have her guilty plea reversed and is challenging state procedures used to prove she had marijuana in her system at the time of the crash in 2009, the Daily Herald report.

The defense attorney for Alia Bernard, 31, of Aurora, has argued the methodology for testing Bernard’s blood was flawed and has subpoenaed two state crime lab workers to testify. He is next expected in court on Sept. 11, according to the article.

The crash occurred in May 200i9 on Route 47 near Elburn when Bernard rear-ended another car and caused a huge pile-up, the newspaper reports. The crash killed Wade and Denise Thomas from St. Charles.
