Kennedy School students dance the afternoon away at annual prom celebration

Laughter, music and formal attire filled the halls of Kennedy School on May 1 as students gathered for their much-anticipated annual prom.

With the help of volunteers, the school’s cafeteria was transformed into a festive and welcoming space where students dressed to impress and enjoyed an afternoon of dancing, friendship and fun.

The highlight of the celebration came with the crowning of the 2026 Prom King and Queen. Amid cheers and applause from their peers, Najee L. and Jesna J. were honored with the titles, capturing the joy and spirit of the day.

Students spent the afternoon on the dance floor, enjoying their favorite songs and celebrating alongside classmates and staff who helped make the event possible. From vibrant decorations to lively music and a delicious lunch prepared by Kennedy School’s culinary arts students and staff, every detail contributed to a memorable experience.

Helping bring the event to life were members of Andrew High School’s Student Council, who spent the morning decorating the cafeteria with balloons, streamers and prom-themed decorations purchased with council funds.

“I like seeing other people smile,” said Andrew freshman Megan Orbon.

“I like helping people and supporting people,” added freshman Evelina Gecevis.

Sophomore Jacqueline Idowu said volunteering at the prom held special meaning for her.

“I have family members with special needs who never had the opportunity to attend prom,” she said. “This is near and dear to my heart.”

Kennedy School teacher Leslie Chowaniec also expressed her appreciation for the Andrew students and their advisors.

“They made our afternoon extra special,” she said. “We’re grateful to Miss Barb and Miss Tracy and all the Andrew High School Student Council members for their support over the years.”

“Prom is always a special tradition at Kennedy School, and this year’s celebration was truly wonderful,” said Principal Dawn Angelini. “It was inspiring to see our students come together—with support from peers and staff—to create such a positive and memorable experience.”

Located in Tinley Park, Kennedy School at St. Coletta’s of Illinois is a non-public therapeutic day program serving students with a variety of disabilities. The school partners with districts across the south, southwest and western suburbs, including Thornton, Plainfield, Flossmoor and Lockport.

The 2026 prom reflected the heart of the Kennedy School community—full of energy, inclusion and celebration—and left students already looking forward to next year’s event.
