MATTESON, IL — A Park Forest man has been charged in a crash that killed another Park Forest man, Illinois State Police said Tuesday.
Gregory D. Miles, 40, has been arrested in connection with the July 2025 crash that killed Riley Vercher, 25.
On July 27, 2025, at approximately 4:06 a.m., state police responded to a multi-vehicle crash on I-57 southbound, just north of Vollmer Road in Matteson. Several occupants had exited a stalled vehicle and were attempting a restart, state police said, when one person was side-swiped in the lane by a passing vehicle.
The suspect's vehicle then became disabled at the scene, after which he fled from the scene on foot. The injured victim and an additional person were then struck by a second vehicle. Both victims were taken to an area hospital, where Vercher was pronounced dead.
After an extensive investigation, Miles was identified as the driver of the suspect vehicle and a warrant was obtained for his arrest.
On May 11, ISP Special Agents arrested Miles and presented the case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Miles has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash and failure to report a fatal crash.
He is being held at the Cook County Jail pending his first court appearance, state police said.
