St. Coletta’s of Illinois is launching a spring appeal inviting donors to help preserve one of the organization’s most beloved historic landmarks: its Blessed Mother statue. The marble sculpture has stood on campus since the early days of St. Coletta’s and Kennedy School, quietly witnessing generations of students, families and staff who have shaped the organization’s story.

St. Coletta’s of Illinois has been serving children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities since its founding in 1949 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, providing education, vocational training, and lifelong supports that foster dignity, independence, and community inclusion. For more than seven decades, that mission has remained at the heart of everything the organization does—growing and evolving while never losing sight of its roots in compassion and care.

The Blessed Mother statue is a powerful reminder of that shared history. Carved from marble and featuring likenesses of boys who once attended Kennedy School, it reflects the individuals who helped build the foundation of St. Coletta’s earliest years. For many, it is more than a landmark—it is a place of memory, comfort and connection.

Today, time and the elements have taken their toll. Visible wear on the statue has created an urgent need for preservation, and St. Coletta’s is seeking community support to ensure it can be protected for generations to come.

Plans are underway to construct a protective structure that will shield the statue from further weather damage while preserving its place at the heart of the campus.

“This statue is part of our shared story,” said St. Coletta’s CEO Heather Benedick. “It connects the people we support today with those who came before them—the students, families and staff who built this community. Preserving it means preserving that legacy of care and belonging.”

Community members, alumni and friends of St. Coletta’s are encouraged to contribute to the spring appeal. Every gift, no matter the size, helps ensure this cherished symbol remains a lasting source of inspiration and remembrance.
