Creativity takes the wheel at Kennedy School’s first-ever box car parade

The halls of Kennedy School became a parade route filled with music, applause and smiles earlier this month as students proudly cruised through the school's first-ever Box Car Parade in handcrafted cardboard vehicles they spent weeks designing and building.

Students and staff lined the hallways to themed music, cheering, clapping and offering high-fives as each young driver proudly showed off their one-of-a-kind creation. The festive event celebrated not only creativity, but also the hard work, determination and confidence students developed throughout the project.

Over the course of several weeks, students designed, built and decorated imaginative box cars, putting their creativity and teamwork on full display. This year's parade featured an impressive variety of creations, including a Jurassic Park Jeep, Lightning McQueen from Disney and Pixar's Cars, a princess-themed vehicle and an amphibious-style Jeep complete with swinging doors and a dashboard covered in miniature rubber duckies.

With the guidance of teachers, therapists and classroom staff, students used paint, craft materials and plenty of imagination to transform ordinary cardboard boxes into extraordinary works of art. Along the way, they strengthened fine motor skills, practiced problem-solving, exercised creativity and expressed their unique personalities.

What began as a fun classroom project quickly grew into something much bigger.

"As the cars became more elaborate, I thought, 'Everyone should be able to see them,'" said teacher Tasheka Klimczak.

That simple idea sparked a schoolwide celebration, giving every student the chance to shine while classmates and staff celebrated their accomplishments together.

"The smiles on their faces said it all," Klimczak said. "They were so proud of what they created."

The Box Car Parade is just one example of the engaging, hands-on experiences offered at Kennedy School that help students build confidence, develop important life skills and discover the joy of learning in a fun, supportive environment.

Kennedy School is part of St. Coletta's of Illinois, which serves children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, empowering them to achieve their greatest potential.
