Salvation Army's Disaster Relief Supplies 'Critically Low' Amid July Storm Response

COOK, WILL, DUPAGE COUNTIES — Following Monday's severe storms and five confirmed tornadoes across the Chicago region, The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team is urgently appealing for public support as resources are being stretched thin by a season of repeated disasters, the agency said Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, tornadoes touched down in Lansing, Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest, Harvey, Homewood, Glen Ellyn, Orland Park, and Wheaton. Additional communities experienced significant damage from straight-line winds and flooding.

Since the storms moved through the region, The Salvation Army's EDS unit based in Elk Grove Village has been providing food, water, and emotional support to affected residents and first responders working in impacted communities.

However, after responding to a series of major storms throughout Illinois this spring and summer, emergency supplies at The Salvation Army's warehouse have reached critically low levels. Communities facing water service disruptions and other storm-related challenges continue to request assistance, placing additional strain on already depleted inventories.

"Our teams remain committed to serving every community that needs us, but our resources are being stretched to the limit," said Matt Coatar, Emergency Disaster Services Manager for The Salvation Army. "Financial donations made today allow us to quickly purchase water, food, cleanup supplies, and other critical resources needed to help families recover from disasters."

The Salvation Army is asking Northern Illinois residents, businesses, and community organizations to support ongoing relief efforts through financial contributions. Donations will help purchase emergency supplies and ensure disaster response teams remain ready to serve when the next emergency occurs.
