Both drivers voluntarily submitted to a breathalyzer, with neither showing any sign of impairment, said Deputy Police Chief Brian McDermott, who referred to the incident as a "tragic accident."

Reports that the incident was a hit-and-run were inaccurate, police said.

Police were at the scene as of 6:30 p.m., and northbound Harlem Avenue was closed for several hours while police investigated.

The roadway reopened at 1:20 a.m.
