Bank Robber Who Shot Himself During Police Chase Was a Former Cop
Maurice Chester Dodd had been fired from the Atlanta PD in January. Last week, he robbed a bank in Matteson.

The man who shot himself to death during a police chase after robbing a Matteson bank was a former police lieutenant in Atlanta. Maurice Chester Dodd, 44, a 12-year veteran with the Atlanta Police Department, was fired in January after he was charged with driving under the influence, according to Atlanta Police media affairs.
Dodd robbed the BMO Harris Bank at 4940 W. Lincoln Highway on Nov. 14, making off with $4,200. A police officer was in the bank as Dodd was leaving with a fistful of cash, and a teller told the officer he’d just robbed the bank, according to a report in the SouthtownStar. Dodd led Matteson Police on a chase up and down Interstate 57 before he left the highway at the Vollmer Road exit. As he crossed Cicero Avenue, a pursuing officer saw Dodd shoot himself in the head. His car sped into a utility pole.
Matteson Police Deputy Chief Rob Debeikis told the Chicago Tribune Media Group Dodd was in town visiting relatives. Police have been unable to find an answer to why he robbed the bank and killed himself.
