Banners In Tinley Will Honor Local Veterans, Current Military
A new banner program in Tinley Park will honor veterans and current military members from Memorial Day to Veterans Day every year.
TINLEY PARK, IL — Local veterans and current military personnel will be honored through a number of banners featuring their likeness in Veterans Plaza and along Timber Drive in Tinley Park from Memorial Day until Veterans Day. The village of Tinley Park's Veterans Commission has announced the new "Veterans Banner Program," which is part of a national effort to recognize the service of veterans and current members of the military on a local level.
Family members or friends of the veteran or current military member can buy a banner for $150 and feature the serviceperson's likeness, name, branch of the military and years of service according to a news release from the village of Tinley Park.

"It's a nice way to honor their service," said Wiley Roberts, chairman of the Tinley Park Veterans Commission. "Now, in addition to having the opportunity to purchase a brick to honor their service you can honor them through a banner as well."

Roberts is referring to the village's 'Hero's Walk' on the South Side of the 80th Avenue train station that feature names of veterans and splits the names up by the service in which they served.
Applications for banners, which can be found here along with information on how to apply, will be due every year on April 1. The banners will be 30 inches wide and 60 inches tall, printed on both sides, according to the village.

Roberts said those who apply will need to send the serviceperson's image and information along with verification that the person has either served and been honorably discharged or is currently in the military. Deceased veterans are to be included as well, Roberts said.
Eligibility for the banner program includes that the veteran or current military member either reside in Tinley Park or have membership in either the Tinley Park Veterans of Foreign Wars or American Legion chapters.
