Caller Falsely Reported Multiple People Shot, Man Threatening To Shoot Police At Tinley Park Home: PD

TINLEY PARK, IL — Tinley Park police are investigating to determine the source of a swatting call that reported several people shot inside a Tinley Park home Wednesday, police said Thursday.

Police responded early Wednesday morning to a home in the 16400 block of Bormet Drive after receiving a report that a caller had shot family members and threatened to shoot responding officers.

A man exited the home holding a handgun, police said. Police ordered him to drop the gun, and the man complied. He was taken into custody without incident.

Police determined that no one inside the home had been injured and that the reported shootings had not occurred, police said Thursday.

Investigators believe the incident was a swatting call, which involves someone making a false emergency report intended to generate a large police response to an unsuspecting person’s location.

"These incidents place innocent people, responding officers, and the community at significant risk because police must respond based on the information they receive," police said.

No criminal charges were filed against the man.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to identify the individual responsible for making the false report.

"The Tinley Park Police Department commends the responding officers for their professionalism, restraint, and teamwork throughout this incident," the department said.

"Their actions brought a rapidly evolving and potentially deadly situation to a safe conclusion."
