D228 Students complete requirements for Read for a Life Time challenge

The program has Illinois high schools promote and encourage their students to read from the annual booklist of 25 titles.

TINLEY PARK, IL - A number of Bremen High School District 228 students have completed the requirements to receive a “Read for a Lifetime” certificate from the state of Illinois. The statewide program targets high schoolers to promote the enjoyment of reading by encouraging students to read both classic and contemporary literature, and rewards them for their efforts.

The program has Illinois high schools promote and encourage their students to read from the annual booklist of 25 titles, which represents a mixture of classic and contemporary literature. Certificates are given to students who read at least four books from the posted booklist, read all 25 books on the annual list, read at least four titles from the annual posted list all four years of high school, and read all 25 books on the annual posted booklist all 4 years of high school.

All certificates are signed by Secretary of State and State Librarian, Jesse White. At Bremen High School District 228, a total of 11 students received the honor. The students are:

“I participated in Read for a Lifetime because reading improves brain function, and everyday when I read I get better with my vocabulary and pronunciation,” said Simranpreet Kaur of Oak Forest High School. “This recognition is really important to me because it makes me feel really great that I was able to improve my reading skills and make my parents proud.”

This is the first year that Bremen High School District 228 promoted the initiative to its students. Over the history of the program, 22,587 students and adults from more than 500 high schools and public libraries throughout Illinois have read 111,632 books, according to program statistics. A total of 384 students have read all 25 books on the list in a given school year.

Bremen High School District 228 is located in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and serves the communities of Midlothian, Posen, Tinley Park, Markham, Hazel Crest, Country Club Hills and Oak Forest.
