District 146 Board Reorganizes

A new face was welcomed by Board of Education and a retiring member was honored.

With April’s election results certified, the District 146 Board of Education held its Reorganization Meeting on Monday, May 8. Three Board Members were sworn in, including new member Amy Hamernick.

Hamernick is a Media Center Director at Century Junior High, and the mother of two Fierke Education Center students. She and her husband Paul live in Oak Forest with their two daughters, Adeline and Elise. She is a past treasurer of the Fierke PTO and a current member.

“I want to thank everyone for electing me to this position and putting their trust in me,” said Hamernick. “I am honored. I look forward to serving on the board as an advocate for all of District 146; students, staff, and families.”

Also taking the oath were two returning members, Dean Casper and Darcy Nendza. Casper has been a member of the Board since 2003 and Nendza joined in 2015.

Following the oaths, the newly seated Board voted on officers for the next two years. Darcy Nendza was elected President, Julie Berry will serve as Vice President, and Rick Lloyd will be secretary.

To close the meeting, the Board said goodbye to longtime member John Malloy. Malloy has served on the Board since 2007, but did not run for reelection in April. During his tenure he served as Vice President for two years and President for eight years.

“I am proud of everything we accomplished for the families of the District during my time on the Board,” said Malloy. “I want to thank my fellow Board Members, some of the best civic leaders I know. I also want to thank Dr. Stawick and his administrative team. And, of course, the teachers and staff. They are the heart and soul of the District and they make it special.”

“Throughout the years, John Malloy has given so much of his time to District 146,” said Dr. Jeff Stawick, Superintendent. “He has served the District through construction projects, remodels, curriculum changes and so much more. The District is better because of his tireless efforts. He is a model of Board leadership and a great person. I will miss working with him dearly.”

Community Consolidated School District 146 is comprised of Central Middle School, Fierke Education Center, Fulton School, Kruse Education Center, and Memorial School. Students from Tinley Park, Orland Park, and Oak Forest attend District 146 schools.
