George 'Dude' Spanos: 1932-2012

Owner of Spanos Open Air Market, now Crete Family Fun Center, will be laid to rest Thursday.

George “Dude” Spanos of Tinley Park — owner of the former Spanos Open Air Market and current Crete Family Fun Center — formerly of south suburban Crete, passed away on Sept. 29, 2012.

The Crete Family Fun Center will be closed Wednesday and Thursday to mourn him.

He was born Sept. 8, 1932. Beloved husband of the late Stella T. Spanos nee Chirikos, whom he married in 1954. Loving father of Peter (Charlene) of Crete, IL and Thomas (Melissa) Spanos of Tinley Park. Cherished grandfather of George J. (Lisa), John, Thomas and Dennis.

He and his wife were members of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Olympia Fields. 

Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Smits Funeral Homes-Steger Memorial Chapel, 3045 Chicago Rd., Steger. Funeral Service will be Thursday, 12:30 p.m., at Steger Memorial Chapel. Entombment at Skyline Memorial Park in Monee.

George also enjoyed coaching the Steger Little league and Crete Bulldog Youth football. Memorials may be made to the United Leukodystrophy Foundation 2304 Highland Dr. Sycamore, IL 60178.
