Marian Girl Builds Golf Championship Brick by Brick

Junior medalist leads Marian Catholic to second-place finish in golf regional; Homewood-Flossmoor and Lincoln-Way East also advance to next week's sectional.

FLOSSMOOR -- Sylvie Brick is a born competitor.

Brick, the individual medalist at Wednesday's Marian Catholic Class AA girls golf regional, led her Spartans to a second-place finish in the team chase.

She enjoys fighting back the nerves that come with playing in a big tournament.

"I felt relaxed all day and even if those nerves came up, I just kind of shook them out," Brick said. "I like to remind myself that feeling is why I play golf. You have to embrace those nerves and those butterflies."

Brick, a junior, shot an even-par 71, while Marian finished the day with a 334. Defending state champ Homewood-Flossmoor won the regional title, which was at the Coyote Run Golf Course, with a 294.

"Everybody went out and did what they had to do," Homewood-Flossmoor coach Rick Pavinato said.

Lincoln-Way East joined Marian and Homewood-Flossmoor in the survivor category. All three teams move on to sectional play Monday. Lincoln-Way East shot a 358 to finish in third place.

The Griffins picked up scores from Kathy Sterling (74), Kelly McGovern (89), Katie Reno (94) and Hannah Petraitis (101).

"We had a slow start, but the girls finished strong and they needed to because we had our sister school, Lincoln-Way North, right on our heels," Lincoln-Way East coach Mary Weitz said.

Weitz said the Griffins have some work to do before they return to Coyote Run to play in the sectional.

"We need to work on our short game," Weitz said. "The greens are a lot faster than on our practice facility."

Ten individuals not on qualifying teams also are moving on to play in the sectional, Sandburg's Angela Wojtczak and Mairead Delaney. Wojtczak shot an 85, while Delaney shot a 92.

Sandburg coach Todd Allen said he is not going to make any drastic changes before the next round.

"At this point in the year, you're not really doing anything major in terms of swing changes or anything," he said.

Andrew finished seventh with a team total of 405. Erin Browne led the Thunderbolts with an 88 and will be moving on as an individual to sectionals. Three of her junior teammates shot 10-12 shots above their averages, according coach Carrie Cox.

"A little disappointed there," Cox said. "But they're juniors, so we're real excited because if you look at what we did last year, we've improved. I think our future looks very good."

Lincoln-Way North finished with a 366, good for fourth place. Three girls from Lincoln-Way North advanced: Bridget Curtin (88), Margaret Curtin (88) and Kelly Sweeney (93).

Providence Catholic finished in fifth with a 382. Two girls from Providence advanced:  Kelly Brightmore (92) and Celeste Bern (95).

Lincoln-Way West finished ninth with a team total of 428 and Lincoln-Way Central was 10th 434.
