Photo Contest Now Open: Forest Preserves of Cook County Seeks Best Nature Photography

COOK COUNTY — The next iconic image of a soaring eagle, a misty prairie sunrise or a family discovering nature could earn a place in front of thousands of people across the region as the Forest Preserves of Cook County's 2026 Photo Contest is now open.

Now through August 16, the Forest Preserves will accept entries for the annual contest, inviting photographers of all skill levels to share their best images from more than 70,000 acres of public lands. The contest celebrates the beauty, wildlife, recreation and changing seasons found throughout the preserves while showcasing the unique perspectives of the people who explore them.

"We know there are incredible photographers exploring the preserves every day, from seasoned wildlife photographers to people simply capturing a memorable moment on a walk," says Forest Preserves General Superintendent Adam Bianchi.

"This contest allows everyone to share their unique perspective while inspiring others to discover and explore these remarkable public lands."

Photographers may submit up to five images captured within the Forest Preserves, including Brookfield Zoo Chicago and Chicago Botanic Garden. Winning photographs will be featured in the Forest Preserves' 2027 wall calendar, social media channels and other publications. Photos should feature Forest Preserves landscapes, plants, insects, birds or other wildlife, and people enjoying the outdoors. Entries must be submitted through the online contest platform through August 16 and meet all contest requirements.

A panel of Forest Preserves staff will use a blind judging process, meaning entrants' names are removed before images are reviewed. Entries will be evaluated solely on the quality of the image and its ability to capture the spirit of the Forest Preserves. Fifteen winning photos will be selected for the 2027 calendar, which includes one for the cover, one for each month, and one each for Brookfield Zoo Chicago and Chicago Botanic Garden.

Winning photographers will receive 10 copies of the 2027 calendar and a prize package full of Forest Preserves swag and experiences:

• Tickets to Brookfield Zoo Chicago, Chicago Botanic Garden and GoApe Zipline & Adventure Park
• Free one-night cabin stay at any of the Forest Preserves’ campgrounds
• One-hour kayak rental for two people at Maple Lake
• One-hour kayak rental for two people at Busse Lake, Tampier Lake or Skokie Lagoons
• One round of golf at any Forest Preserves golf course
• And more!

In addition to the calendar winners, judges will select up to 24 runner-up images. These images may be featured in the Forest Way newsletter, on Forest Preserves social media channels and on fpdcc.com, giving photographers additional opportunities to have their work showcased throughout the year.
