Brake Fire Caused Semi Hauling Lard To Go Up In Flames: State Police

Traffic was snarled on I-80 east Tuesday afternoon as crews fight to put out a semi truck in flames near Tinley Park. No injuries reported.

TINLEY PARK, IL — No one was injured Tuesday afternoon when a brake fire caused a semi trailer hauling lard to become fully engulfed in flames on I-80 east, Illinois State Police said.

Crews were called to the scene on I-80 near the Harlem Avenue exit just before 1 p.m. The roadway was shutdown from LaGrange Road to Harlem Avenue while crews battled the blaze. The cab was able to detach prior to the trailer becoming fully engulfed, according to state police.

Traffic on I-80 eastbound was stopped for a stretch and backed up for miles. One eastbound lane had reopened just after 2 p.m.

The left lane will remain open as cleanup continues.

Westbound lanes remained open, but experienced delays throughout the cleanup.
