TINLEY PARK, IL — A Subway employee who set off the restaurant's alarm by mistake last week is accused of not renewing his annual sex offender registration and not letting authorities in Tinley Park know he works in the village.

Ronald R. Atkinson, 20, of Riverdale was charged on Oct. 20 with failure to register change of employment and failure to renew annual registration. Police say he was working at the Subway restaurant at 7212 W. 191st St. at 9:53 p.m. that night when he told them he set off the burglar alarm in error while closing the restaurant.

A Tinley Park police officer was in the nearby Target parking lot when he heard the alarm going off at the Subway, according to a police report. The officer checked the law enforcement agencies data system on Atkinson while speaking to him and found he is a registered sex offender who was overdue for his annual registration. His due date was April 12, according to the report.

Police said Atkinson told them he knew he was overdue for registration and that he was incarcerated in Indiana at the time of his due date. When he was released from custody in Indiana, police said Atkinson told them he tried to register as a sex offender in Riverdale but authorities there told him he could not because he did not have any current address documentation.

Atkinson told police he had been working at the Subway on 191st Street since Sept. 25, according to the report. But police checked and said there was no record of him registering his employment there either.
