Student-led enrichments provide leadership, voice

Students help natural disaster relief efforts in Morocco, Libya

Too often strategic plans sit idle on a shelf and do not sync with day-to-day operations. Fortunately, the District 230 Strategic Framework is guiding the work of the district day in and day out. One of the Framework goals is to enhance enrichment and leadership opportunities to reach all students. To put the goal into action, students are working with peers and school personnel to expand cultural responsiveness.

Student-led enrichment opportunities align perfectly with the goal. Andrew junior and President of the Arab Student Union Wael Farache recently organized a presentation for his fellow Tbolts about the recent earthquake in Morocco and storm damage in Libya. He and his fellow students discussed the devastation caused by these natural disasters and shared the death toll, injuries and businesses lost, but most of all, informed students how they can help the relief efforts.

Farache said, “If you could donate even a dollar to help the people over there, then do your best. Try to support them any way possible; tell your friends. With the blessings you have - take them, use them wisely, donate, and help. Show that everyone in this world is together and we remember them today in Andrew.”

Student-led enrichments are designed to raise awareness, educate, and gauge interest. After the presentation, club members met again to plan a fundraiser. They worked with a local Arab-owned business to sell falafel sandwiches to students. All proceeds were donated to the Moroccan and Libyan relief efforts.

“We wanted to start with something small that could make a big difference. Tbolts are like our brothers and sisters, why not expand that family across the world,” Farache said.
